During the initialization process of your KeepKey device, a master private key will be generated using entropy from your device and computer. This master private key is a long string of numbers and letters that is unique to your KeepKey device. From this master key, your KeepKey creates a unique structure of private keys that are then used to initiate transactions. Your public keys, which are used to generate addresses, are also derived from your master key.
Since it is not ideal to memorize a long string of numbers and letters, KeepKey automatically converts this long string into a 12-word recovery sentence for you to write down. This 12-word recovery sentence is a group of easy to remember words known as a Mnemonic Seed Phrase. If your device is ever lost, stolen or broken you can use your 12-word recovery sentence to access your assets again.
Do not underestimate the process of writing your recovery sentence down; make sure you have every word spelled correctly and that they are in the right order.
Never create a digital copy of your recovery sentence; do not store your recovery sentence on a computer, mobile phone or cloud storage.
Never share your 12-word recovery sentence with anyone; if someone has access to your 12-word recovery sentence then they have access to all of your assets.
Your 12-word recovery sentence is only displayed once; you cannot view your 12-word recovery sentence after the initialization process is finished.
KeepKey supports 12, 18, and 24-word recovery sentences - If you already have a recovery sentence and would like to recover it onto your KeepKey device, you have the ability to use any one of these three sentence lengths.
